With all the talk about the influence of the media and propaganda I wanted to see what you all thought about the topic. Has society's advance into the Information Age actually led to a more ignorant public? Although technology is at an all time high, it seems like basic knowledge of civics and constitutional rights are at an all time low. Are we headed down the path that was tread in novels such as "A Brave New World" and "1984?" Or are we not so far gone yet? What do you guys think?

I definitely think that societies advance into the information age has given more a reason for people to be ignorant. In class today we talked about how so many of the issues brought up in the media focus solely on celebrities and what famous couple broke up. That makes it easy to be ignorant. So many people would rather focus on that then what is going on in the world. it takes someone who is highly motivated to take note of what is actually going on in the world.
For what it's worth, I did a little research to see where society's understanding of the constitution stands right now. This would be an excellent way to test if civic awareness and sense of responsibility is lower. I found a survey conducted by the Public Agenda Foundation from 2002. In it, 65% of the respondents said that the rich and powerful, in reality, have more rights than everyone else. When asked if it is dangerous that very few people have detailed knowledge of the constitution, 42% said it was "sad, but not dangerous". These figures demonstrate that a large portion of the population is not well versed in our own constitution. If we don't even know all our rights and responsibilities as citizens of the United States, how can we stand up for them?
I definatly beleive the public is more ignorant about what's going on in the world these days. Young people would much rather relax, watch a "reality" TV show or play a video game rather than read the NY Times. I feel it will only become more and more like this with each generation.
I believe that society has taken a bad turn. With the concern for global warming, problems of natural hazards becoming too strong to handle (hurrican katrina), it's mother nature's way of saying watch out. From the intense election of 08 to the Iraqi War to rising gas prices, I believe we as consumers of Earth will see judgment day, December 21, 2012. Wait, the purpose of technology was to make work easier and quicker for man. This was the entire goal of creating tools and technology. The problem is that how lazy are humans willing to be. No longer are they willing to get off there couches to turn off the tv manually. It is human nature to want to have easier access and get to the point faster. With the new technology of today, we have no use for man anymore, we are just the ones who push the buttons. This is very scary but i believe it is true. Should humans have a limit or look for a different goal?
